Job Description Job Description Job Description: Senior Chemist – Cosmetics & Skincare (Contract Manufacturing) Position Summary: We are seeking an experienced Senior Chemist to join our Research & Development team in a fast-paced contract manufacturing environment. The Senior Chemist will lead formulation development, oversee laboratory testing, and ensure compliance with industry standards for cosmetic and skincare products. This role requires strong technical expertise, creativity in product development, and the ability to manage multiple client projects simultaneously while mentoring Lab Staff. Key Responsibilities Product Development Lead formulation development for skincare, personal care, and cosmetic products from concept to scale-up. Customize and reformulate existing products to meet client requirements (performance, texture, cost, and regulatory compliance). Conduct stability, compatibility, and preservative efficacy testing to ensure product safety and performance. Client & Project Management Collaborate with clients to translate concepts into viable product formulations. Provide technical expertise in client meetings, addressing formulation, feasibility, and regulatory considerations. Prepare technical documentation, product briefs, and lab samples for client approval. Laboratory Operations Manage and prioritize multiple formulation projects within deadlines. Maintain detailed records of formulations, testing, and results. Ensure Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and safety protocols are followed. Regulatory & Quality Compliance Ensure formulations comply with FDA, EU, and other relevant cosmetic regulations. Work with Quality Assurance and Regulatory teams to prepare documentation (PIF, SDS, COA, ingredient lists, claims substantiation). Support scale-up, pilot, and production batches to ensure consistency from lab to manufacturing. Leadership & Mentorship Supervise, mentor, and train junior chemists and technicians. Share best practices, troubleshoot formulation challenges, and foster innovation within the R&D team. Qualifications Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Cosmetic Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field. 5 years of formulation experience in cosmetics, skincare, or personal care (contract manufacturing experience preferred). Strong knowledge of raw materials, emulsions, surfactants, actives, and cosmetic chemistry principles. Familiarity with FDA, EU, Health Canada, and global cosmetic regulations. Hands-on experience with stability testing, microbiological preservation, and scale-up processes. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects. Strong communication skills for client interaction and team collaboration. Preferred Skills Experience with natural, clean beauty, or OTC formulations (sunscreens, acne, etc.). Knowledge of sustainable formulations and trending cosmetic actives. Proficiency with formulation software and ERP systems.
