In House Banking Lawyer (Retail Banking)

About the Role You will provide expert legal advice on a broad range of regulatory matters, with a focus on consumer credit, deposit-taking, and prudential compliance. This role is critical in managing legal risk, supporting business objectives, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulatory frameworks. Key Responsibilities Provide timely and pragmatic legal advice across the bank’s operations, products, and regulatory obligations Advise on consumer credit matters under the National Credit Code and broader retail banking regulation Review product collateral and assess legal incidents or breaches, including regulator engagement (ASIC/APRA) Collaborate with internal stakeholders and manage relationships with external legal counsel Contribute to a high-performing, visible legal team that partners effectively with the business What We’re Looking For A minimum of 5 years PQE with a strong grounding in financial services or banking law Demonstrated expertise in consumer credit, retail banking regulation, and prudential standards Strong commercial judgement, high emotional intelligence, and a collaborative, professional style Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills Unrestricted practising certificate Desirable Experience with ASIC/APRA regulatory engagement Familiarity with the Customer Owned Banking Code of Practice Background in a mid/top-tier law firm and/or financial institution Culture & Fit Our client is building a high-calibre legal team defined by integrity, responsiveness, and commercial acumen.
