Job Description Job Description Summary: Residence Life and Housing aims to create holistic opportunities for residential communities through intentional interactions, community engagement, and service, with the goal of fostering a sense of belonging and community ownership among our students. This part-time, 20 hours a week Graduate Assistant position reports to the Assistant Dean of Conduct & Director of Residence Life & Housing and begins on July 1, 2025. Essential Duties and Responsibilities As a Graduate Hall Director (GHD), you will learn and apply the knowledge and skills in the following areas: Learn how to effectively supervise, support, and develop a team of 4–6 Resident Assistants (RAs) through regular check-ins and leadership in team settings. Gain experience in providing individualized coaching, facilitating training, and fostering a team culture during meetings and staff interactions. Build skills in fostering inclusive communities, managing roommate conflicts, and responding to student behavioral issues through mediation and support. Learn team-building and facilitation skills by leading small RA staff meetings, delivering departmental updates, fostering staff connection and addressing resident and community needs. Learn about the student conduct process while serving as a conduct hearing officer. You will learn how to manage the steps, sanction, and document behavior. Learn how to manage program planning by overseeing the RA program expectations, reviewing proposals and supporting the execution of student engagement events that align with department goals. Learn skills in community development and inclusion by facilitating a positive and welcoming residence hall environment through student conduct meetings, roommate mediation, and community communication efforts. Learn to manage administrative tasks including room changes, incident reporting, and building walkthroughs to identify facility needs. Develop skills in crisis management and emergency response while serving in a rotating on-call role, including making time-sensitive decisions under pressure, completing incident reports, and responding to facility concerns. Gain familiarity with university policies, Clery reporting, and mandatory reporting responsibilities while ensuring student accountability. Learn about higher education administration and student development by participating in weekly departmental meetings, enhancing communication and collaboration across Residence Life & Housing staff teams. Uphold standards as a campus leader, learning to navigate confidentiality, ethics, legal obligations, and professional boundaries within higher education. Secondary Duties and Responsibilities Graduate Hall Director’s are key partners in the social, co-curricular, and academic engagement opportunities provided by Residence Life & Housing. As a Graduate Hall Director, you will be assigned to one (1) of the following collateral positions. Graduate Hall Director for Housing Operations & Student Conduct This position reports directly to the Director and/or Associate Director of Residence Life & Housing to assist with big-picture tasks and responsibilities as it relates to Housing Operations, Student Conduct, and social media content. Learn operational management skills by assisting with the opening and closing procedures of the residence halls during the Fall and Spring semesters. Develop digital communication and marketing experience by managing the department’s social media presence to promote key processes and deadlines (e.g., health & safety inspections, maintenance requests, housing selection, and closing information). Enhance web content management skills by updating housing selection website pages with accurate and timely information for returning and new students. Build attention to detail and data management skills by maintaining and auditing the Student Conduct Tracker. Demonstrate adaptability and collaboration by assisting the Director and/or Associate Director of Residence Life and Housing with additional departmental tasks as needed throughout the academic year. Graduate Hall Director for Residential Curriculum This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Residential Curriculum within Residence Life & Housing to assist with RA programming, community engagement/assessment, and social media content. Learn skills around teamwork and collaborative leadership by partnering with the Head Resident Assistant (HRA) to complete marketing and social media. Develop program planning and student engagement skills by supporting the Assistant Director of Residential Curriculum in implementing residential curriculum initiatives. Learn to evaluate and support students by reviewing programming proposals and attending Residential Education Program (REP) events. Learn organizational and inventory management skills by assisting with the documentation and upkeep of Rex’s Room (RA resource closet). Learn to research and assess competencies by supporting the planning, data collection, and analysis for the Resident Satisfaction Survey. Learn skills for digital marketing and outreach by contributing to the department’s social media presence and promoting RA programs and community initiatives. Learn administrative tasks by assisting with regular audits of the RA Closet Key Inventory. Learn to manage staff by tacking and following up on RA Bulletin Board and Door Decoration submissions to support community standards and programming expectations. Graduate Hall Director for Selection & Training This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Selection & Training within Residence Life & Housing to assist with RA recruitment and selection processes, RA experience efforts, and social media content. Learn about collaborative leadership and project management by working with the Head Resident Assistant (HRA) to complete various responsibilities. Learn skills in developing staff training and strengthen coordination skills by assisting the Assistant Director for Selection and Training in organizing August RA training, including logistics, session planning, and material preparation. Learn the processes for personnel recruitment and selection by supporting all phases of the RA hiring process, such as creating interview questions, refining application materials, and designing outreach strategies. Learn event planning and staff appreciation skills by helping organize RA recognition efforts, including kick-off events, end-of-year celebrations, bulletin boards, monthly birthday emails, and the Rexy Awards. Learn skills in developing digital engagement and branding by contributing to the department’s social media presence (e.g., RA recruitment, training highlights, and Rexy Award recognition). Learn about administrative process management by assisting with regular audits of the RA Training Binder Inventory. Learn about organizational efficiency by maintaining accurate documentation and inventory of the RA On-Call Backpack supplies. Experience, Knowledge, and Skills Required Enrolled in a graduate program at Queens University of Charlotte Experience that demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of first-generation college students Preferred Qualifications At least one year of experience working as part of a student activities or residence hall or another student affairs functional area Possess leadership skills and the ability to work effectively within teams Possess effective communication skills to successfully approach people, mediate problems, situations, and enforce policies Easily approachable, friendly, and able to establish and maintain strong rapport with students Ability to use discretion and exercise good judgment Must be able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive student information Effective community development and programming experience Renumeration This is a mandatory live-in position that includes a rent-free, one bedroom, furnished on-campus apartment including water, electricity, cable, internet, and free on-site laundry. On-campus apartments are pet and partner friendly. Graduate Assistants are provided with a campus-dining plan during the academic year (10 meals/week, $450 Lions dollars per year), a stipend for on-campus parking, and membership to the Levine Fitness Center. Graduate Assistants are eligible for 2 tuition-free graduate courses per academic semester, including summer if actively serving in the graduate assistant role. IMPORTANT: No tuition remission is available for Cybersecurity Management courses. Graduate Assistants enjoy flexible scheduling. Time away to be coordinated with immediate supervisor. Graduate Assistants may be employed outside of Queens for part time work as agreed upon with their supervisor, so long as it does not interfere with the core learnings of this position.
