Ascendion - Technical Engineering Manager - AWS Data Platform

About the Role : We are seeking a highly experienced and dynamic Tech Engineering Manager with a strong background in AWS data services and Snowflake to lead our data engineering and analytics initiatives. This is a critical leadership role that requires a unique blend of deep technical expertise, proven project management capabilities, and exceptional people leadership skills. You will be responsible for driving the design, development, and delivery of robust data solutions, managing a high-performing team, and acting as a key liaison with client stakeholders. This role operates in a hybrid model from our Bangalore or Chennai offices. Key Responsibilities : Technical Leadership & Architecture : - Lead the architectural design and implementation of scalable, high-performance data pipelines, data warehouses, and data lakes on AWS and Snowflake. - Ensure the adoption of best practices for data ingestion (ETL/ELT), data modeling, data quality, data governance, and data security. - Possess a strong and recent (within the last 1 year) hands-on understanding and experience with AWS data services (e.g., S3, Glue, Redshift, Lake Formation, Kinesis, Lambda, Athena) and Snowflake (including Snowpipe, streams, tasks, stored procedures, performance tuning). - Stay abreast of emerging data technologies and trends, evaluating and recommending their adoption to enhance our data capabilities. - Fluently articulate complex data and analytics concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, translating business requirements into effective technical solutions. Team Leadership & People Management : - Manage, mentor, and coach a high-performing team of at least 10 data engineers and/or data analysts, fostering a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous learning. - Conduct performance reviews, provide constructive feedback, and support the career development and growth of team members. - Participate actively in the recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding of new talent to expand the team. - Ensure effective resource allocation and workload management within the team. Project & Delivery Management : - Oversee the end-to-end delivery of complex data projects, ensuring adherence to timelines, budget, and quality standards. - Drive the adoption of Agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban) within the team, ensuring efficient sprint planning, execution, and delivery. - Identify and mitigate project risks, proactively addressing challenges to ensure smooth project execution. - Ensure high quality of deliverables through robust testing strategies and code reviews. Stakeholder & Client Communication : - Serve as the primary technical point of contact for client stakeholders, effectively communicating project progress, technical challenges, and proposed solutions. - Demonstrate very strong communication and presentation skills when interacting with clients, understanding their needs, and managing expectations. - Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, business analysts, and other engineering teams to align data initiatives with broader organizational goals. - Possess exceptional people management skills to navigate team dynamics and foster strong working relationships. Required Skills & Experience : - Overall Experience : 10 years of progressive experience in data engineering, data warehousing, or data analytics roles. - Team Management : Mandatory minimum of 3 years of experience managing a team of at least 10 members (Data Engineers, Data Analysts, or similar data professionals) in data-focused projects. - AWS Data Expertise : Strong recent hands-on experience (within the last 1 year) with core AWS data services including Amazon S3, AWS Glue, Amazon Redshift, AWS Lake Formation, AWS Kinesis, AWS Lambda, and Athena. - Snowflake Proficiency : In-depth expertise in Snowflake data warehousing, including schema design, performance optimization, Snowpipe, streams, tasks, and stored procedures. - Data & Analytics Fluency : Ability to "talk the data & analytics language fluently" - meaning a deep understanding of data warehousing concepts, data lakes, ETL/ELT processes, data modeling (dimensional, 3NF), and the ability to translate complex data insights into business value. - Programming & SQL : Strong proficiency in SQL and at least one programming language commonly used for data processing (e.g., Python, Scala, Java). - Project Management : Proven experience in managing end-to-end data projects, including planning, execution, monitoring, and closure. Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies. - Communication : Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, including senior leadership and non-technical stakeholders. - Stakeholder Management : Demonstrated ability to effectively manage client relationships and internal stakeholder expectations. - People Management : Proven ability to lead, motivate, develop, and retain a high-performing technical team. - Problem-Solving : Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities for complex data challenges. Nice to Have : - AWS Certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Data Analytics - Specialty, AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional). - Snowflake Certifications. - Experience with other cloud data platforms (Azure Data Factory, Google Cloud Dataflow, BigQuery). - Familiarity with data governance tools and practices. - Experience in specific industry domains (e.g., Finance, Healthcare, Retail). - Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related quantitative field.
