Job Description

This position works in the Animal Production Sciences (APS) Branch of Agriculture Victoria Research and undertakes research activities which aim to improve the productivity and profitability of pasture-based livestock systems. The appointee will contribute to designing and implementing research within the multispecies pastures research program, assist in reporting on the research both internally and to external stakeholders, and prepare scientific publications and other written material. The appointee will primarily conduct research into multispecies swards for lamb production systems that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce the reliance on nitrogen fertiliser, are productive, nutritious, water and nutrient efficient, and persistent through climate challenges. The incumbent will also contribute to other associated livestock research projects at the Hamilton SmartFarm. This will be achieved through innovative research and science excellence, supported by technical efficiency, business processes, technology adoption and knowledge management. The successful applicant will work as part of a team of researchers and technical support staff and will have expertise in Agronomy or ruminant animal nutrition with a well-developed understanding of grazing-based livestock systems. The appointee may be required to manage projects and supervise research scientists, technical staff and post graduate students. Besides project work, the successful candidate is expected to contribute time to broader Departmental activities including contributing to strategic planning and decision making as required. You will enjoy flexible working arrangements and undertake a wide variety of work across the branch. Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications Essential: A degree in Agricultural Science, Science, or an equivalent science qualification, with post-graduate qualifications in a relevant science discipline such as agronomy, grazing ecology or ruminant nutrition (candidates who have submitted their thesis are encouraged to apply). Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and operation of ruminant production systems as applicable to grazing-based environments. Demonstrated research experience in the implementation of animal experimentation, including non-destructive sensor technologies to measure pasture and animal parameters, and the subsequent interpretation of generated information. Demonstrated experience of effective participation in research project teams and leadership of research projects and demonstrated experience of working with minimal supervision and displaying high levels of initiative. Well-developed communication skills, with proven ability to develop and maintain relationships with peers and key stakeholders, an emerging track record of publication of scientific work in science journals and at science conferences, and the ability to effectively present results of research to a range of audiences, including farmer discussion groups, industry and scientific peers. A thorough understanding of the principles of Work Health and Safety (WH&S), the application of Animal Ethics standards to research projects, and in the supervision of staff and supervision of post-graduate students. This is a fixed term position available for a period of 3 Years. The work location for this position is Hamilton Smart Farm.
