Job Description

Job Purpose This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing all inside and outside cable plant systems at USAP stations. Key responsibilities include the maintenance and troubleshooting of the station's phone system, fiber and copper connectivity, and call management systems supporting over 1,200 users. The role involves critical tasks such as installing cabling, splicing optical fiber, and assisting with network and communications troubleshooting. Duties and Responsibilities Install OSP & ISP copper and fiber cables as needed. Maintain and troubleshoot fiber and copper circuits for voice and data. Survey all OSP cables and hardware for damage and schedule repairs as necessary. Complete seasonal tasking assignments for OSP facilities (cables, road crossing, cable trays, etc). Install and maintain all network transmission and distribution media, including twisted pair and optical fiber. Install and maintain inside and outside CATV, UTP, and Fiber distribution plants. Preferred ability to work safely and efficiently at elevated heights using ladders, bucket trucks, and telehandlers. Provide voice/data services to outlying field sites. Install and repair McMurdo telephones as needed. Provide support for testing and implementation of wireless LAN devices and Cisco wide-area communications. Support PairGain and provide maintenance support for HDSL transmission facilities. Maintain up-to-date cable records and labeling. Maintain department inventory records. Create weekly progress reports to leadership. Maintain and report monthly performance statistics. Update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as needed. Assist in annual departmental inventory and re-supply ordering. Ensure that work areas meet all ASC and USAP safety standards. Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the workplace. All other duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional technical education or certifications in telecommunications or related fields is strongly preferred. Minimum of four years of experience working with telecommunications systems, including installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Proven experience with outside plant infrastructure, including aerial installations and above-ground cable trays ("buried" installations). In-depth knowledge of outside plant (OSP) and inside plant (ISP) cabling systems, with expertise in fiber and copper technologies. Proficiency in copper and fiber splicing, with the ability to execute high-quality terminations and repairs. Familiarity with Cisco switches and network port assignments, including basic configuration and troubleshooting. Strong understanding of wiring standards, including Ethernet 568A and 568B, and adherence to wiring color codes. Demonstrated ability to test, troubleshoot, and repair copper and fiber circuits using industry-standard practices and tools. Solid knowledge of troubleshooting various ancillary communications equipment, with the ability to identify, diagnose, and resolve cabling issues effectively. Ability to complete assigned tasks independently with minimal or no supervision, ensuring high-quality results. Proficiency in using computers and software used for telecommunications operations. Skilled in the operation of telecommunications testing equipment such as OTDRs, cable continuity testers, signal tracers, and wire mapping tools. Minimum of four years' experience in telecommunications systems is required. Minimum of two years' experience maintaining digital communications equipment is preferred.
